Fiberlink® Simplifies Windows 7 Readiness Testing

MaaS360® Windows 7 Readiness Service Automatically Evaluates All Computer Inventory for OS Migration

Blue Bell, Pa.—July 8, 2010Fiberlink Communications Corporation, the provider of cloud-based Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) solutions, today announced its cloud-based MaaS360® Windows 7 Readiness Service. Fiberlink’s service provides IT with visibility into which PCs can run Microsoft’s Windows 7 operating system (OS) and which ones need to be upgraded to prepare for it. Armed with a clear picture of the requirements, IT managers can plan rollout schedules and budget for any needed hardware upgrades.

Met with widespread acceptance in both the retail and enterprise sectors, Microsoft’s Windows 7 has sold some 150 million copies so far. However, the system requirements exceed those found in many older PCs. Prior to migrating to the new OS, IT managers must determine the specifications of their entire computer inventory. This can be a time-consuming process, especially for laptops and other remote PCs connected through wireless networks and beyond the physical reach of IT staff.

Fiberlink’s Windows 7 Readiness Service automatically collects information from each computer, regardless of its location, and compares it to Microsoft’s system requirements. MaaS360 analyzes attributes such as processor speed, physical memory and hard drive space. With easy-to-read charts and graphs, the Fiberlink service provides detailed information about each computer’s ability to be upgraded.

Fiberlink created a brief video and a number of free resources to help prepare for Windows 7 migrations, which can be found at http://windows7.maas360.com/readiness/7-steps-for-a-windows-7-migration/. The resources include free applications that test any computer for Windows 7 readiness, a “what if” cost estimator for upgrading hardware and software, and an easy-to-follow best practices guide. These tools provide a way for CIOs and CFOs to work together to develop an efficient Windows 7 migration plan that minimizes waste.

“Windows 7 is on pace to become the de-facto standard in the business world. However, the lack of visibility into computer inventories and the need for manual inspections are slowing the migration process,” said Christopher Clark, COO at Fiberlink. “MaaS360 automates the task of data collection and provides definitive answers that enable IT staff to make informed, fast decisions and effectively plan for a successful Windows 7 migration.”

The MaaS360 service was specifically designed to work with the elements unique to Windows 7.  The software automatically identifies whether the computer is running a Windows 32- or 64-bit version and installs the appropriate version. The service provides a comprehensive analysis of any computer with Windows XP, Windows Vista or an existing installation of Windows 7, both the 32-bit or 64-bit version.
