Smartphone sales dip, but will remain strong

Smartphone revenue dipped a bit during the second quarter, but device sales should remain strong moving forward, according to a new study released by Infonetics Research. During the second quarter, $31.4 billion was spent on smartphones, which is 1.4 percent less than the previous quarter. Infonetics said the drop was more due to price erosion within the market than anything else, as shipments of smartphones rose 2 percent during the second quarter. By the end of this year, Infonetics said smartphone revenue should reach a total of $117 billion, or 31 percent more than 2010. Also, the report found that tablet sales spiked 80 percent during the second quarter and that, thanks to the iPhone, Apple's smartphone revenue share stood at 36 percent. It was the second straight quarter that Apple's share increased, according to Infonetics. Recent research from ChangeWave also revealed a continued high level of demand for Apple products despite the sudden departure of co-founder and CEO Steve Jobs. In August, 85 percent of nearly 3,000 Americans polled who said they planned to purchase a tablet said they planned to buy an iPad. |
