SAP executive discusses mobile device management

SAP is one of the largest developers and distributors of enterprise software in the world. The company has also embarked on one of the most ambitious mobile device management programs.

In addition to the usual deployment of smartphones, the Germany-based firm has also handed out 3,000 iPads to its employees. Chief information officer Oliver Bussmann recently spoke with ZDNet concerning his company's enterprise mobility program, as well as where the practice is heading for many others.

The greatest benefit, Bussmann told the news provider, has been the enhanced access to information.

"Folks like to be more informed proactively rather than waiting for a report," he told ZDNet. "The tablet is a super device to get access to the information to make better and faster decisions."

However, he did acknowledge that MDM programs will have to change along with the use of tablets, as employees find new ways they can help.

In several companies, the ongoing consumerization of IT is inspiring comprehensive support for a range of mobile devices. According to a recent Forrester Research report, 59 percent of companies now support personally owned smartphones in some way.
