Planning to Develop In-house Apps for iOS 5?

    28 September 2011 (Last edited: 14 June 2012)

Industry experts and Apple fans are anxiously waiting for the unveiling of the iOS 5. The iOS 5 offers a host of interesting features for developers like iCloud, voice commands, Newstand, Twitter integration, etc. If you are an application developer and are interested in exploring these features, your enterprise must enroll in the Apple Enterprise Developer program.

An enterprise can enroll into the Apple Enterprise Developer program by paying an annual

membership fee of $299. The Apple enterprise membership must be renewed for every passing year. Once the user has logged into the Apple development portal, he has access to proprietary iOS resources. An Apple developer may access different tutorials, videos and reference documents for developing in-house apps and distributing them to employees and/or customers.  When required, a developer may also request help from Apple engineers or post his concerns or questions in the Apple Development forum.

For creating an enterprise account, it is mandatory that an organization has

    1. A valid DUNs number from Dun & Bradstreet. The DUNs number is a unique number and a widely recognized standard for identifying businesses in the market place and regulatory entities.

    2. Approval from Apple for the iOS Developer Enterprise Program.  The Enterprise Program permits an organization to develop and distributes iOS applications within the organization.

Apart from access to resources for developing in-house mobile apps, you may also create single or multiple APNs or Apple Push Notification Service certificates for managing your iOS devices. The APNs certificates are a prerequisite for hosting Mobile Device Management (MDM) solution for iOS devices. APNs is an Apple hosted mobile solution that allows enterprises to communicate with the endpoints in the cloud by sending notifications. Using the iOS based MDM platform, the administrators can push notifications to iOS devices from the cloud anytime and anywhere. The certificates are valid for a year, from the date of issue, and must be reloaded every year. To learn more about getting an APNs certificate, refer to my Ezine article.

Here is a link to a video tutorial for enrolling in the Apple Enterprise Developer program.

So, don’t wait. Enroll yourself into the 'Apple Developer Enterprise' program and be a step closer to managing your iOS devices and developing your own in-house mobile iOS apps!
