It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s the IT guy!
Sarcasm? Perhaps a little. But if there was ever a day that those in IT could called, “super hero” – it’s today. With budgets being cut left and right, hackers around every corner, and users downloading dangerous software, there is no lack of villains to fight off. But with restrictions that prevent IT departments from spending on anything new, many of my customers feel like they have no power to make a difference.
By take some nods from some of our favorite super heroes, though, they might find that secret weapon to save the day:

X-Ray Vision, Superman – Imagine if you could see what all your users are doing, whether they’re using the laptop you gave them for working at home, how often they log on with their 3G card, what software they haven’t used in ages. Let’s say last year you bought 3000 seats of a given software. Now, with your x-ray vision, you see that its only actually being used on 2436 laptops. That’s over 500 seats you don’t need. So this year, you stop paying for them. Talk about saving the day!
Controlling the Weather, Storm from X-Men – What if you could control the IT environment for your workers around the world? If they were using incompliant software, you could send in a drought and shut them down before you face fines. If they got a virus, you could send in a flood of anti-virus software and wash it out before they spread it through the corporate network and shut you down for days. Stopping villains from causing harm is one of the best super hero traits.
Cool Gadgets, Batman – Since you’re not able to buy new technology, why not just try some out for free? With the popularization of cloud computing, there are a lot of new products that are offering trials for no cost that could actually help you get the power to see things like Superman and control things like Storm. And when the ban on spending has finally been lifted, you’re the guy who is going to have all the info on the new must-have.
Let’s face it – we all want to be super heroes. And since a recession is terrible thing to waste, the time is now to uncover your super powers.
